Train Tailwheel was started in 2024 to provide advanced and initial tailwheel training in Southern Maine. Our curriculum based learning program allows students to stay focused and receive thorough instruction on all aspects of tailwheel flying. During training, we visit several grass and paved airstrips in the area for a variety of learning experiences. These strips range from 11,000ft paved to 700' grass. The courses include ground instruction and flight time, meals on site, and all training material. These are generally intense courses designed to pack as much learning as possible into a couple days. You will leave here confident in your tailwheel abilities as we go above and beyond the typical logbook endorsement.
Our instructors are all high time pilots with extensive tailwheel experience. With experience in flying STOL competitions and true backcountry experience in Alaska, Idaho, Utah, and of course, all over New England, this is true tailwheel training. We do initial tailwheel endorsements, advanced training, off-airport/bush flying, transition training into any type of Cessna taildraggers, Supercubs, Super Decathalon, Maule, Pitts, Husky, RV, and plenty more. We are focused only on tailwheels. We do not do initial PPL training, instrument training, or anything else. It's important to us to stay focused on tailwheel operations so that our courses are well developed and provide the best training possible.
SERVICES
SERVICES
Almost all of our offerings are via "courses". These courses are generally 1-3 full days and have set schedules. Your day is segmented into ground lessons and dual instruction in the air where you practice what you've learned during ground training. Lunch is provided from a number of fantastic local restaurants. Generally training is done as groups of 2. You will be paired with another student for the ground portions or bring a friend and train together. Flights are usually limited to about an hour each to reduce fatigue. You will do a number of flights throughout the day. Our instructors handle the navigation, radios, and everything else not related to your instruction. You are here to learn how to fly tailwheel, not talk to ATC. We let you focus on the new material. We've found that doing this as a course for 10 hours actually saves time and money vs. doing an unstructured program. You get in, focus, and spend 10 actual flying hours really mastering tailwheel flying. There's no wasted time. We operate out of a very quiet untowered airfield and can complete many more laps in the pattern per hour than in normal training.
OUR PLANES
OUR PLANES
Whenever possible, we recommend training in your plane. You want to be comfortable in the exact plane you fly. If that isn't possible, we have a few different options for your training. Although fun to fly new things, we recommend picking the plane closest to what you fly or intend to fly so that you spend less time "transition training" to a new aircraft and more time learning how to master the tailwheel.
Cessna 150 - 150HP, climb prop, big tires, STOL kit, vortex generators, +more. This is a fully equipped backcountry machine with docile handling. Due to weight limitations, only students under 180lbs are accepted.
Cessna 170B - Classic taildragger in near stock form. Very easy to fly and plenty of room. This is an easy transition plane from the 172 you might be used to.
Piper PA18 Supercub - Typical backcountry cub with 160HP, 35" tires, Borer prop, vortex generators, 3" extended gear with Acme shocks, T3 tailwheel. This plane is set up for backcountry fun.
